A Penetration Tester is a highly skilled security specialist who spends their days attempting to breach computer and network security systems to ensure that people cannot access an organisation’s data without authorisation.

Depending on the security threat and the need, Penetrations tester’s may be asked to work nights or weekends to ensure data is secure.

Penetration Tester Job Requirements

Employers tend to look for the following things in Penetration Tester job applicants:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Security or Information Technology

Comfortable with programming languages such as C++, Javascript, Python, Ruby and SQL

Knowledge of security assessment tools such as Aircrack-ng, BURP Suite and SQL Map

Knowledge of security frameworks including HIPAA, NIST and SOX

Knowledge of operating systems such as Linux, Unix and Windows

Strong written and oral communication skills and an ability to write reports on their assessments in order to communicate potential weaknesses to the IT Team and Management

Superb problem-solving skills to enable them to determine the most effective way to correct issues that arise
